“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” – 1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV
“I now know why the gods rarely speak to us, nor let us answer. Till that word can be dug out of us, why should they hear the babble that we think we mean? How can they meet us face to face till we have faces?” – Orual, Queen of Glome, Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis
I recently read Till We Have Faces by C. S. Lewis. It is a very interesting portrayal of the Greek myth of Psyche and Cupid. I admit I got a little lost in the story as I tried to determine what the point was, what allegory C.S. Lewis might have been trying to explain. I began to lose sight of the story as anything other than a story, until I got to the above quote.
Wow. Right there is the crux of everything. We want to be known and understood, but so often the one we most need that knowing and understanding from is ourselves. And how can we do that unless the Only One who truly does know and understand us reveals us to ourselves, through Himself?
It is an amazing thought.
God, help us to realize that how You see us is not just another perspective, but the only perspective worth having. Give us our faces.
